Chuyến bay MH77 là kiểu máy bay Boeing 777 ,  có số đăng ký là 28411 = 2 + 8 + 4 + 1 + 1 = 16 = 1 + 6 = 7 . Chiếc Boeing 777 thứ 84 này bay lần đầu vào ngày 17 - 7 - 1997 , (đúng 17 năm trước khi rơi) , và giao cho hàng không Malaysia Airlines ngày 29 - 7 - 1997 , (12 ngày sau đó) đã bay hơn 43.000 giờ  (43 = 4 + 4 = 7) . 
Loại máy bay bắt đầu dùng trên thị trường ngày 7 - 6 - 1995 , có khoảng 1.200 đang dùng với 340 (34 = 3 + 4 = 7) chiếc chưa giao cho khách hàng .
Từ ngày kiểu này ra đời , được xếp vào loại rất an toàn , chỉ xảy ra 4 tai nạn mà thôi , nghiêm trọng nhứt là chuyến bay 370 cũng cũng hảng HK này , mất tích tháng 3 năm nay .

The Boeing 777 entered commercial service on 7 June 1995; as of June 2014, there were approximately 1,200 aircraft in service with some 340 unfilled orders.[25] Aviation experts say the model has one of the best safety records in commercial aircraft. Only four other 777s have suffered a hull loss: British Airways Flight 38 in January 2008; a cockpit fire in a parked EgyptAir 777-200 at Cairo International Airport in 2011; and Asiana Airlines Flight 214 in July 2013, in which three people died. Malaysia Airlines 777, Flight 370 (registration 9M-MRO), went missing on 8 March 2014 and was still being searched for at the time of Flight 17's crash.
