My laptop Makes a high pitched noise.?

My laptop makes a high pitched noise when the power cord is plugged in. The power cord is kinda messed up so it tends to "disconnect" itself. I.E, its plugged in but not powering the laptop. The noise starts when the power cord "disconnects" itself, however if i unplug it myself, the noise goes away. Please help, i fear it may be an electrical short.

More than likely, your motherboard is in need of repair.

Usually this is a result of sliding the laptop backward and having it hit a wall. The cord is sticking out and gets rammed into the laptop, breaking the connection: The same thing can happen if the laptop is on a coffee table for instance with the power connector sticking out past the edge of the table. If someone walks by and clips the cord with their leg, the force may break the connection.

Laptops that have been plugged in and unplugged a lot over time can both develop a loose connection on the motherboard and a "wallowed" out power connector.

There is a small connection on the motherboard that your power cord attaches to. This is shaped like a box with a pin sticking out of it. You can see the pin by looking into the hole on your computer that you plug the power cord into. This box has two small solders, one on each side. These attach it to the two motherboard connections that pass power from the cord to the laptop. I believe in your case that one of these sides has broken loose. You can usually see this for yourself because when you plug in the power cord, it will have a lot of "play" side to side. You may even have to keep pressure against the power connection to use the laptop.

This is the most common problem I see on laptops, and they can be repaired MOST of the time.

You should expect to have to pay between $100 and $150 for this repair

The high pitched squeal is noticeable when the connection is barely touching, this is why it will disappear when pressure is applied. The pressure allows for a better connection.

You are damaging your laptop using it this way. You can kill it very easily this way.

There are a few options:

1 Get it fixed -more on that later

2 Set the laptop down and prop something against the power cord so that the connection is tight. If you do this you will make the problem worse over time. A loose electrical connection will heat up until it melts. Do this only until you get your data saved before sending the laptop for repairs.

3. Set the laptop down so that the connection is tight and charge the battery. Unplug the cord when using the laptop on the battery and recharge as necessary.

4. Buy an external charger and an extra battery and stop using the cord.

There is a remote possibility that the end of your power cord has become wallowed out, and will only make connection when pressure is applied. In this case you can test it by using someone else's power adapter, IT MUST BE JUST LIKE YOURS and have the same Output Voltage and Amps.

If theirs does not work and yours does not work it is probably the connection.

If their power adapter does work and yours does not, then it is your power adapter.

If you do not have an extra power adapter, take a look at the connection on the laptop where you plug in the cord. Use a small stick, like a match, and GENTLY try to wiggle the pin in the middle of the hole. This pin should not move. If it does move, even slightly, the problem is in the connection, not the cord.

Hope this helps
